Cheap Flights and Holidays to Koh Samui, Thailand from Ireland
Up until the late 1970’s the island of Koh Samui was an unknown backwater that barely registered on the maps but that all changed in 1971 when two tourists arrived on Thailand’s third largest island via a coconut boat from Bangkok and it stumbled across this little piece of paradise where white sand beaches, palms blowing in the wind and clear green seas sparkle in the sunlight. If you wish to visit a place called paradise, come to Koh Samui with flights and holidays always available.
The island had very little infrastructure and it wasn’t until the early 1940’s that Koh Samui had no roads or cars. 1973 saw a 52 kilometre long concrete road being built around the island.
Koh Saumi or Samui as it’s referred to by locals is an island off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus in Thailand. It is located close to the mainland town of Surat Thani in Surat Thani Province.
The old centre of the island is a fishing village called Nathon on the island’s west coast, which is a charming little town and is the centre of commerce for the island’s native Samuis. Aside from this the tourist amenities surrounding the main beaches, which have become towns in their own right and they offer anything a traveller could ask for on a relaxing sun holiday. Things to do
Buffalo Fighting Festival
A gentler alternative to the Spanish tradition of Bull Fighting. The locals decorate the buffalos beautifully and ready them for battle with each other, the fight may be bloody but it’s not always fatal and is far more fair than the barbaric Spanish tradition. The owner of the winning Buffalo could go home with millions of Thai Baht so the festival is a big event on the local calendar and is quite a spectacle.
Full Moon Party
Having already mentioned this in the brief overview I won’t go too in depth on the topic but it is without a doubt the definitive Thai islands experience and one that cannot not be missed.
Jungle Trekking and general exploring
The island is small but big enough for an adventure, why not take one night off the drink and get out of bed early for a day of exploration. There are a lot of beautiful things to see on the island, from lofty waterfalls and craggy peaks to lush jungle littered with Buddha statues and hidden beaches without a soul in sight; there are even a couple of fairly low brow rock formations going by the names of Grandfather and Grandmother that have been know to get a cheap laugh out off explorers… I’ll let the reader find the rest out.
