Things to do

Agua Caliente Markets
This is the spot where you will get some souvenir shopping in en route to Machu Picchu. Come prepared to haggle- it is more than expected here and look out for traditional items such as ponchos, handcrafts and Alpaca sweaters and scarves.

Hot Springs
These springs are the perfect way to unwind after a long day spent wandering the ruins. They are located at just a short stroll away from the main plaza and are quite cheap too. They would be particularly beneficial if you’re planning on camping!

Bird watching
This is another great way to spend a section of your day in Machu Picchu- particularly when you consider that there are over 400 species living in the surrounding trees and other foliage. Birds of prey such as Aplomado falcons, mountain caracaras, and black-crested buzzard eagles are often spotted while out on the stalk. Make sure to have a gander for some guans and motmots too!

Cuzco
You will base yourself in Cuzco if you plan on trekking up those high altitudes.  It is advised that you spend some time in Cuzco first. Here is where you can become acclimatised to the altitude before reaching the even higher altitudes on the trail. Thankfully spending some time in Cuzco wont be a waste though- as there are several amenities on offer in Cuzco - like restaurants, cafés and the nightlife is fantastic. Try the local speciality of 'cuy' (guinaea pig) if you dare)
